Perspective Short
The 28-hour drive from Minnesota to New Hampshire allowed my anxious mind to run through all the problems I could encounter attending a school so far from home. The one thing I assumed would be stress free was meeting and moving in with my two roommates. I had decided to start fresh and went through the random selection roommate process; wrongfully assuming that my two roommates also did not know one another. After messaging each other for a few weeks prior to move-in, I felt as if we naturally had a connection even though we all grew up very differently.
Eva is from Connecticut – she has a personality that brings
out everyone’s good energy the second she enters a room. She is bubbly, easy to
talk to, and very opinionated. Heather is from New York. She knows how
to make everyone laugh, but she also has a soft side which allows people to easily
open up to her. Heather is also very opinionated. Then there is me – the
girl who struggles to stand up for herself, is extremely indecisive and can
quickly be defined as a “people pleaser.” It’s also important to note that I am
extremely oblivious to the fact that the two strong women standing in front of
me, do not want to be rooming with me.
Heather’s perspective:
Meeting and finding a roommate so easily only made me more
excited to leave home and head to UNH. The car was packed weeks before we
actually had to make the drive from Pleasantville to Durham. My mom continued
complaining and I continued ignoring her, “Heather, I still need to drive to
work. STOP packing more things into the car.” She could keep asking, but the more
prepared I was, the quicker we could leave come August 28. My excitement quickly
turned back to anxiety when Eva and I received the phone call that we were
getting a third roommate – HOW COULD WE BE GETTING A THIRD ROOMMATE? Eva and I
picked each other, we got into our first choice dorm, but apparently the
universe didn’t like how well things were going for us, because this happened.
The only thing the university offered us was to switch to a different dorm……our
choices were a stranger living with us for a year, or a really shitty dorm – we
unhappily selected the Minnesota girl hoping she would want to leave before the
spring semester.
