Indoor Skydiving: Gone Wrong
A day at IFly
First-Person Perspective
Back in California, probably around eight years ago, my dad, his girlfriend Susie and I went to this place called IFly, an indoor skydiving facility. I've only gone twice in my life because it's so expensive. But this day we had planned to go together. We arrived and suited up for our session along with other people in our group. We had a blast being blown into the air by a huge fan each taking turns with the instructor’s guidance. After the fun was over we got ready to leave. While checking out, my dad saw a little boy climbing up a curved wall by the front door. As we were walking out my dad decided to follow the little boy's lead because he's really a child at heart. He goes to climb up the wall before he gets very far we hear a loud “crunch!.” My dad had put his entire foot into the drywall leaving a huge hole in the wall. Susie says wide-eyed “Let's go! let's get out of here!” In this moment of shock and awe I didn't know what to do. But my dad decided to confess and offered to fix the damage and pay for it. The employees were not too happy and declined his offer. We left IFly in tears of laughter replaying the scene in our heads. Both Susie and I were not surprised that he was the one to copy a little kid's movements not realizing he was a bit too old and big to be doing something like that.
My dad’s perspective
We had been planning this trip for a while now, Melanie is so excited to go to iFly. Although it is pretty expensive, I’m looking forward to my girlfriend, daughter, and I spending time together. Once we arrived at iFly, I noticed this cool-looking wall. I stare at it, then shift my gaze up at the ceiling, scanning the room for architectural imperfections. After checking in, we get dressed in the flying suits and gather in the skydiving tube where all the action happens. I look over at Melanie, and laugh at her excitement as our turns are coming up. When it’s my turn to fly, I ask the instructor if I can do flips and tricks like I saw the other instructor doing beforehand, but he said no. I thought to myself, damn, why the hell not! We began to take off the suits and check out for the day. As we were leaving, I saw a little kid running and climbing up the wall I noticed earlier when we walked in. I knew I had to go test it out. I mean if the kids could do it why can't I? Right before we passed the wall I said to Melanie and Susie, “hey check this out!” I began to run up the wall when all of a sudden I feel my foot crunching through the drywall. I stay there for a second, with my foot fully within the wall. I quickly wrench my foot out, which is now covered in white drywall. I left a gaping hole in the wall right in front of the entrance. I look up to see Susie about to make a run for it saying “Let's go! Let's get out of here!” Melanie is stunned into silence unsure of what to do. I decided that I need to confront the employees about this. Karma has come back to me more than once before, I don't need any more bad luck. I could definitely come back and fix this, I have some tools outside in my truck that could work. When I go up to the employees and owner and explain what happened, they seem not too happy as I say sheepishly “I'm so sorry, I would be happy to fix this.” They declined my offer and sent us on our way out of the building. At this point, both Melanie and Susie were laughing hysterically as we recalled everything that just happened. I guess I was a little too big to try and climb that wall, but at least I tried it. I mean I had to, that kid looked like he was having a blast!
