The materials for this week were very powerful. My favorite was "The Problem that has no name" by Hannah Bonner. At first, I was confused by the piece, but then I watched it over again and finally got the. message. The "problem" that doesn't have a name, is the burning desire for something more in life besides being a housewife. The short film captures women in moments of their lives, craving and pretty much being drawn to more in life besides their womanly duties. This is still an issue today, where women are still not getting treated the same in the workforce. The simple desire to be a domestic housewife has gone out the window. This is a really great point of view because lots of women suffer from this still to this day. Women are constantly being told what to do and pressured by society to take on certain roles.
"Bad Feminist" by Roxanne gay was a very interesting read. This woman calls herself out on being a bad feminist because she enjoys pink which feeds into the concept of gender binary roles, she listens to music that degrades women and watches movies that have sexist jokes about women in them. While being a feminist is about supporting women, it is hard to find things that don't have these jokes or sexist remarks in them. I like how she owns up to her "mistakes" but is able to call herself a feminist because when it really comes down to it she stands for women's rights.
Lastly, I really enjoyed "Un/tied Shoe" because of the representation. Evie Ruddy is able to express the difficulty that shopping for shoes has become for nonbinary people. People who are not nonbinary think of buying shoes has an everyday thing, but it is something that has been gendered by society. You can look at a shoe store and clearly tell which side is for men, and which side is for women. Ruddy helps express the importance to not only represent nonbinary people but all people.
All of these stories really spoke out to me because of the context. While I haven't experienced something like each of these topics, I can relate to the "bad feminist feeling" when listening to certain rap music or watching certain TV shows. I have sympathy for Ruddy for not feeling represented because I am an LGBTQ+ ally.
