A Spoonful of Sugar Storycorps
I listened to "A Spoonful of Sugar: How a Vaccine Inspired a Disney Classic" on Storycorps. This story is about finding inspiration in unassuming places. Jeffery Sherman speaks on how getting a vaccine as a child was the inspiration behind one of Americas most famous songs in cinema history, A Spoonful of Sugar. He recalls how his father always filtered everything down to the simplest form and that words were his religion, he treated them so sacredly and was very careful with what words he chose when he spoke. His father and his uncle had created a song for Mary Poppins called "The Eyes of Love". However, Walt Disney asked them if they could write a different song that was more in line with the philosophy behind Mary Poppins. He recalls being six years old at the time. They were in school getting the polio vaccine which was very new, it was a very exciting time. It it very interesting to hear about a time where they were getting a life changing vaccine because of the time were living in now. To hear about this happing in the past is fascinating. When he came home he said his dad looked very depressed, and so he decided to try and cheer him up by telling him about the vaccine he received. His dad asked him "did the shot hurt?" He told his father about how they put a sugar cube in a cup and gave it to you with the medicine. His father laughed, called his uncle, and they proceeded to create the song "A Spoonful of Sugar." I think it was really sweet his father thanked him for that song, and he went on to speak about how kids inspire things all the time in adults and its important to listen to the inspiration around you. It was a short story, but I loved listening to the little things have such big meaning.
